RIO DE JANEIRO (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) – A 14-3 run in the final quarter gave Uruguay an 84-79 win over Argentina in order to finish third at the Super 4 Tournament in Rio de Janeiro.
Reque Newsome scored 19 points, Leandro Garcia Morales 18, Gustavo Barrera 17, Mauricio Aguiar 15 and Martin Osimani 10 for Uruguay who lost on the first day to Brazil.
Argentina dominated most of the game, winning the first quarter 30-23 and the first half 50-43. Uruguay stayed in the game thanks to their intensity on both sides, not allowing Argentina to take off.
At the end of the third quarter Uruguay closed the lead 61-57 and in the final quarter made the winning run.
"After a hard loss against Brazil, the team took another posture and improved a lot. Argentina is a team that always plays well but we improved on defense and attacked with more intensity in the second quarter. We are going step by step to achieve a berth in the FIBA World Championship," said Uruguay head coach Geraldo Jauri.
Diego Garcia had 22 points, Roman Gonzalez 13 and Leo Gutierrez 12 for Argentina.
