SANTIAGO (Chile) – After a dominant performance against Chile in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025 opener, the United States once again showcased its power on Sunday in the second Group B game, comfortably defeating Colombia 80-43. Just like on Day 1, the game started relatively close during the first eight minutes, but the Americans quickly asserted their dominance and controlled the rest of the way.
Turning point
A 13-0 scoring run in the final two minutes of the first quarter gave the U.S. a 25-10 lead, and from that moment on, it was all red, white, and blue. During the run, Mikayla Blakes and Hannah Stuelke were instrumental— Blakes knocked down two three-pointers, while Stuelke added a pair of doubles. That burst allowed head coach Kara Lawson’s team to take full control and cruise through the remaining 30 minutes without any major threats.
Player of the game
Blakes led the scoring with 15 points and three triples, while power forward Joyce Edwards nearly recorded a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds. However, it was point guard Olivia Miles who orchestrated the offense and flirted with a triple-double, tallying 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists, finishing with a game-high efficiency rating of 20.
For Colombia, forward Valentina López was the only player to reach double digits, scoring 10 points off the bench, including two three-pointers.
Stats don’t lie
USA pulled down an astounding 30 offensive rebounds, converting them into 27 second-chance points, compared to just four on Colombia’s side. The Americans also dominated in transition (24-6 fast break points) and in the paint (40-10 points inside). Those 30 offensive boards are the second-highest total in Women’s AmeriCup history since 2003 (behind Canada’s 35 vs. Mexico in 2023), while Colombia’s eight blocks marked its highest-ever tally in the competition.
Bottom line
With Sunday’s win, the U.S. moved to 2-0 and now sits alone atop Group B. On Monday, the team will face Puerto Rico— arguably their toughest opponent in the group. Physical conditioning could play a key role in that matchup, as the Stars and Stripes will be playing their third game in consecutive days — though they’ve been able to rotate their entire roster — while Puerto Rico is coming off a rest day. Colombia will take on Mexico on Monday in another exciting matchup that could prove crucial in the battle for at least third place in the group.
