SEREMBAN (Malaysia) - It didn't take long for fans and observers to witness a sterling performance in the FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup 2026 after Lim Yeonseo shone the brightest in the first day of competitions.
In only the second bout of opening day, the 1.70 M (5'6") combo guard led all scorers with 31 points and collected 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals to lead Korea to a 74-71 escape against a hard-fighting New Zealand.
"Our coaches believed in us from the very beginning and encouraged us to stay aggressive, even when shots weren’t falling," she offered moments after the thrilling encounter at the Karisma Arena.
"In the first half, I felt a little lost in certain areas, but the coach kept encouraging me to stay involved and take control of the game. That gave me confidence, and I was able to perform well," she added.
Confident, indeed, was Lim most especially in the endgame when she helped steady the ship amid the Junior Tall Ferns' rally, something that she was able to hone from the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup last year.
Yes, way before setting foot in the U18 Women's Asia Cup,, she had already experienced competing in such a prestigious tournament, absorbing all the lessons and whatnot like a sponge being the team's youngest.
"I was the youngest player on the team at the U19 World Cup, and my teammates took really good care of me," said Lim, who was just 17 entering that event held in Czechia and eventually ruled by the United States.
Now, she's serving as a leader of Team Korea in the ongoing Seremban showpiece, applying everything that she picked up from the 2025 campaign where she helped that squad finish 9th in the 15-team field.
"It’s the opposite. I’m one of the older players on the team," Lim said. "From experience, I learned how important it is to take care of my teammates and do my best to help them. It taught me to be more responsible."
And there should be no doubt how much she's embraced this particular role, as evidenced by her impressive first game against their Oceania counterparts that saw her score 6 of their last 8 points to close it out.
The U18 Women's Asia Cup is still in its early stages but Lim has definitely become one player to watch out for, and none other than her younger self should be beaming with so much pride if she's seeing how she's grown.
"I loved basketball and had a lot of passion for the game from a young age," said Lim, who started playing hoops in fourth grade. "It was my love for basketball and willingness to work that brought me to where I am today."
Surely, among those keeping an eye on her are Busan BNK Sum. The renowned ball club picked Lim straight out of high school, making her the second overall selection in the 2026 Women's Korean Basketball League Draft.
Getting into the pros is definitely a culmination of one her aspirations and as excited as she is for her rookie season, the Supia Girls High School product hasn't totally forgotten all about her other dream.
"My biggest goal is simply to become a player on the Korean senior national team," said Lim, who's been fascinated by the strides that the Korean women's team is hitting on the global stage over the years. "That’s my goal."
The U18 Women's Asia Cup 2026 could just be her stepping stone to that.
