ISTANBUL (FIBA World Championship) – There is nothing quite like the last few days before a major tournament for national team coaches because that’s when they have to make the difficult choices on who to keep, and who to cut from the final roster.

Several teams left it late but all of the squads are now known for the FIBA World Championship.

For Team USA, Mike Krzyzewski didn’t have to make the tough move because Rajon Rondo made it for him.

Admitting he was “on the bubble” of making the squad, the Boston Celtics playmaker didn’t play against Spain in a friendly on Sunday and decided to pull out of the squad and return home to the United States after the Americans travelled to Athens.

Argentina received the unwanted news on Thursday that their inspirational leader Andres Nocioni was being withdrawn by his NBA team, the Philadelphia 76ers, because of an ankle injury.

The exit of Nocioni, who cried at the press conference announcing he wasn’t allowed to play, opened the door for Marcos Mata to join Argentina.

Mata is an unheralded small forward who played for the national team at the South American Championship.

Serbia decided to cut an important member of last year’s team, back-up center Miroslav Raduljica, from their final roster.
