ADANA (IWBF) - National teams in Europe and in Asia Oceania have been battling it out for spots in next year’s World Championships for wheelchair basketball in Birmingham, England.

At the European Championships in Adana, Turkey, four spots for the big event in 2010 were up for grabs and three have been taken by Italy, Poland and the Turks after they reached the Semi-Finals.

Since the Brits, who are hosting the World Championships, also made it to the last four in Adana and did not need to qualify, the side that finishes fifth – France or Germany – will advance to Birmingham.

In Wednesday’s Semi-Final action, Turkey upset Great Britain 75-69 with Ozgur Gurbulak pouring in 40 points for the winners.

Italy also defeated Poland, 57-44, after a 16-point, 11-rebound effort from Matteo Cavagnini.

In the IWBF Asia Oceania Championship in Dandenong, Australia, where three places for Birmingham are up for grabs, Paralympic champions Australia have won four straight games – the last an 86-54 triumph over Korea.
