The countdown to the 2025 AfroBasket is on - only four weeks left!

    Short Read

16 nations, one title at stake!

ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - Africa’s most prominent basketball festival is just four weeks away.

The quadrennial event will take place in Angola for the first time since 2007.

Given the potential of many of the 16 teams to compete for the top step of the podium, it’s one of the most unpredictable tournaments ever.

This year's AfroBasket will take place in Moçâmedes, in Angola's Namibe province, and in the country’s capital city of Luanda.

From August 12–24, Angola will be the place for African basketball fans to focus their attention.

As we write, more than half of the participating teams have announced their preliminary rosters and are training around the world.

Players with experience in the NBA, the Euroleague, the FIBA Champions League, the Basketball Africa League (BAL), and other top leagues around the world are expected to compete in Angola, making this an exciting event.

Of the 16 nations that secured spots in the 2025 AfroBasket tournament, Libya and Madagascar are set to make their first appearances in over a decade.

Libya last appeared in the tournament as hosts of the 2009 edition, and Madagascar last appeared as hosts of the 2011 edition.

The other teams are Angola, Guinea, South Sudan, Senegal, Mali, Egypt, Uganda, Tunisia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Rwanda, Côte d'Ivoire, Cape Verde, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meanwhile, here are some storylines to follow in the lead-up to the 16-nation tournament:

    - Can Tunisia become the first team since Angola in the early 2000s to win three AfroBasket titles in a row?

    - Ranked as the No. 1 team in Africa, can high-flying South Sudan upstage everyone else and become the first team from the East African region to win the trophy?

    - Every time Angola hosted the AfroBasket—in 1989, 1999, and 2007—they came out on top. Can they do it again?

    - Home to some of Africa's most talented basketball players, Senegal hasn't won the title since hosting the event in 1997.

    - Was Nigeria's 2015 AfroBasket title a fluke?

    - How about Cameroon, Cape Verde, Egypt, and Côte d'Ivoire? They have shown great potential to win, yet continue to be denied an AfroBasket title.
