    BANGKOK (World University Games) - Carolyn Ganes hit a game-high 29 points as Canada defeated Turkey 79-64 to go to the top of Group A in the preliminary round of the World University Games in Bangkok.

    Hosts Thailand got off to a winning start despite Korea’s Dug Hi Youn grabbing 21 points. Thailand nevertheless prevailed over the Koreans to win 74-62.

    In Group B, Maria Nikitina netted 30 points as Russia comprehensively defeated Japan 102-61. Anna Petravkova added 16 points while Varvara Psareva sank 15.

    In the same pool, USA beat Latvia 58-55 thanks to a final-period score of 18-10 and 22 points from Traci Ray.

    Dara Kovacevic hit 18 points as Serbia opened their Group C campaign with a 77-57 win over Mozambique, while Ilona Burgrova top-scored with 17 points as Czech Republic beat Chinese Taipei 76-70.

    In Group D, Poland beat China 83-74 with Izabela Piekarska netting 23 points, while Renata Oliveira grabbed a game-high 16 points as Brazil defeated Australia 58-53.
