YAOUNDE (Cameroon) - Over the years, Cameroon has had mixed results at the Women's AfroBasket tournament. With the 2025 edition just around the corner, it remains to be seen how far the Lionesses can go.
One thing is certain: every time Cameroon has hosted the tournament in the last ten years, the Lionesses have finished second (in 2015) or third (in 2021). Their best result away from home was a fourth-place in Maputo in 2013.
In their most recent podium finish, Cameroon defeated Senegal in the third-place game, avenging their loss to Senegal in the 2015 final in Yaoundé.
The current roster features a mix of domestic and international players, making the team an intriguing one to watch.
Ahmed Njoya, the team's assistant coach at the 2019 Women's AfroBasket, has been the head coach since 2021.
The Cameroonians secured their place at this year's African Championship by beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a two-game qualifying series played in Yaoundé in August 2024.
Monique Makami and former WNBA player Dulcy Fankam are two regular members of the team who have played a huge role, leading the team in scoring with averages of 12.5 points per game each over the last three years.
Two years ago, Cameroon started their Women's AfroBasket campaign with a 55-53 win over Mozambique. However, they lost to the same opponent 74-65 in the fifth-place classification on the last day of the tournament.
Cameroon has been drawn in Group D, along with South Sudan and Mali.
