Tahiti’s Volunteers Help Deliver Polynesian Cup and Build Legacy Beyond 2026

    Short Read

Tahiti’s basketball community helped bring the FIBA Polynesian Cups to life, building event experience and a lasting legacy on the road to the 2027 Pacific Games.

TOAHOTU (Tahiti) - Behind every game, every whistle, every score update and every moment captured during the FIBA Polynesian Cup and FIBA Women’s Polynesian Cup 2026 was a team of people helping bring international basketball to life in Tahiti.

The Tahiti Basketball Federation welcomed teams from American Samoa, Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga and the host nation across the men's and women's competitions, with volunteers playing an important role in delivering the week-long event.

While the players took centre stage, the tournaments were also an opportunity to recognise and strengthen the people behind the game. Across the event, local volunteers and members of the basketball community supported areas including the score table and bench, officiating and refereeing, event operations, transport logistics, meal preparations, and livestream coordination, gaining valuable hands-on experience within a regional competition environment.

FIBA Executive Director - Oceania, Amanda Jenkins said contributions of volunteers extended beyond the practical requirements of running a tournament, demonstrating the depth of Tahiti's basketball community.

"The value of creating opportunities for local people to develop the skills and experience required to deliver major basketball events underpins the value of hosting events across the Oceania region," Ms Jenkins said. "We thank Tahiti Basketball, the local basketball community, supporting community partners and every volunteer who contributed their time, energy and expertise throughout the event."

That development aligns directly with FIBA's strategic priority to Empower National Federations, which focuses on strengthening and expanding the capacity of National Federations. Importantly for events such as the FIBA Polynesian Cups, FIBA's 2023-2027 strategy identifies building event hosting capacity and legacy as one of the goals under this priority.

The FIBA Polynesian Cup and FIBA Women's Polynesian Cup represented more than six days of competition. They provided another opportunity to build local knowledge, strengthen operational capability and give volunteers practical experience that can continue to benefit basketball in Tahiti.

From those working courtside and behind the scenes to those ensuring games could reach audiences beyond the venue through livestreaming, each contribution helped create the atmosphere and experience that made the tournaments possible.

With Tahiti preparing to welcome the extended Pacific region for the 2027 Pacific Games, the experience gained through hosting international competitions takes on even greater significance. The relationships strengthened, skills developed and experience shared during the FIBA Polynesian Cups form part of a broader legacy for local sport and its people.
