DAMASCUS (FIBA Asia Championship) - Croat Goran Miljevic has been named as the coach of the Syrian team that will participate in the FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China from 15-25 September.
Miljevic takes over from Bosnian Mensur Bajramovic who had trained the team in last year's WABA Championship where Syria finished behind Iran and Jordan to qualify for the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship.
42-year-old Miljevic is however not new to WABA teams, having led Zob Ahan to a Semi Final finish in the 2004-05 Iranian Super League.
Miljevic, who subsequently moved to Libya and was the coach of their U17 National Team, spent the last year as coach of Al Morog in Libyan Division 1.
Under Miljevic, Syria who are making a return to the fray in the FIBA Asia Championship, will be hoping to better the 11th place finish they achieved at the FIBA Asia Championship at Tokushima in 2007.
Syria have been drawn with fellow WABA team and 2009 FIBA Asia Championship bronze medalists Jordan, East Asia’s Japan and SEABA runners-up Indonesia, in Group C of the Preliminary Round of the competition.
