South Africa - Big win for women’s basketball
The South African women’s senior basketball team has made history by qualifying for the African Championships in Antananarivo, Madagascar, in September. They defeated Zimbabwe 45-44 and 49-48 in Harare, Zimbabwe, at the weekend to qualify for their first international competition. The team included three experienced players in skipper Tuki Modiselle, Emmarentia Ledwaba and Phumla Sathula. Ledwaba and Sathula returned to the country last year after spending almost five years in the US.

The South African women’s senior basketball team has made history by qualifying for the African Championships in Antananarivo, Madagascar, in September.
They defeated Zimbabwe 45-44 and 49-48 in Harare, Zimbabwe, at the weekend to qualify for their first international competition.
The team included three experienced players in skipper Tuki Modiselle, Emmarentia Ledwaba and Phumla Sathula.
Ledwaba and Sathula returned to the country last year after spending almost five years in the US.
Malumbete Ralethe, the team’s head of delegation, said: “This is a great start for the new Basketball South Africa executive mandated to revive the sport.
“It was tough but we are happy that our sisters were able to make all of us proud, especially to qualify for our first international competition in a foreign land.
“The achievement will encourage the new executive to work even harder to ensure that basketball is played regularly in all the nine provinces.
“One of the things we are working on is to take the sport back to the schools.There will be no proper basketball development if our children are not on board.”
Malesela Maleka, BSA president, said: “Congratulations to coach Craig Daniels, assistant coach Brenda Mntungutungu and the team for a job well done.”
The team is: Nosipho Njokweni, Modiselle, Veranique Samuels , Seipati Mokhathi , Ellen Moutlwatse, Requelh Molema , Phuti Mosehlana, Itumeleng Khoabane, Ledwaba, Lungile Mtsweni , Takalani Mfamadi and Sathula.
