Slovenian top basketball player Marko Milic is expected to join Real Madrid of Spain, a club he had played for in the 2000/2001 season, said reports reaching Belgrade from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana on Tuesday.
Milic's current club, Union Olimpija of Ljubljana, confirmed in Tuesday's statement that Milic had accepted an offer "by one of the biggest clubs in Europe for the rest of this season," reported the Slovenian news agency STA.
Milic, 29, ranks 19th among the best Euroleague performers this season with a 16.3 index rating average based on his 15.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game for Union Olimpija.
Milic refused to confirm that he would indeed be moving to Madrid, but Slovenian media have in recent days been rife with rumors of Milic's move to Madrid.
Union Olimpija has said that Milic would miss a key Euroleague game against Partizan of Belgrade on Wednesday.
Milic has captained the team in what has been a frustrating year for the cash-strapped club. In November, he led threats by the players to go on strike over unpaid salaries.
Union Olimpija is 3-11 in the Euroleague, Europe's best club basketball competition, and has almost no chance of making the round of 16.
Milic, who in 1997 as an explosive talent helped steer Union Olimpija to its greatest success, a final four place in the Euroleague, has played for a host of European teams. He also had a brief stint in the NBA in 1998 and 1999 before returning to Europe.
