While going with the core of the players who carried the team to the Semi-Finals of the event two years ago in France and to the Quarter-Finals of the FIBA Women’s World Championship, there were mixed emotions for a trio of rising stars.
Most notably, there was acute disappointment for Aleksandra Crvendakic who had been expected to be given a debut, while Sanja Mandic failed to hold on to her peg in the locker room having played for the first time at senior level in Turkey last year.
On the flip side, there was elation for a third U20 eligible player in Kristina Topuzovic, who was given the green light to head with the team to Hungary.
A total of nine players from the team that took to the court in Istanbul will be back, with Marina Markovic the other cut.
Along with Topuzovic, the other two new faces are the naturalised Danielle Page and recently-crowned EuroLeague Women champion Sonja Petrovic, who returns after six years away from the international stage.
The team is likely to be led by the scoring power of Jelena Milovanovic, along with sister duo Ana and Milica Dabovic when they go up against Great Britain, Croatia, Latvia and Russia in Group C.
