KRAGUJEVAC (3x3) - As of next year the Lausanne based International University Sports Federation (FISU) will add 3x3 basketball to its official events. The Federation already covers over 50 sports but sees the potential in this new discipline.
Kragujevac in Serbia is the host city that will spotlight this rising sport set to take place from 10 to 17 July. FISU intends to have 32 teams for boys and the same for girls.
It is important to point out that no qualification system is foreseen, both FISU and FIBA will select the teams for the Championship. The draw is to be held in June to constitute the final groups.
Eligibility is flexible since, according to the Federation's rules, all student athletes affiliated to an appropriate International Federation and between 17 and 28 years old are fit to participate.
"After the 2010 Singapore YOG some of our national university sports federations showed a big interest in this kind of competition, envisioning its popularity in university sports." said Paulo Ferreira, FISU Executive Assistant.
To fully appreciate and enable fans from all around the world to follow this extraordinary event, TV coverage through FIBATV and YouTube are foreseen.
With still a little more than eight months to go, FISU has their event website already up and running.
