DAKAR (2010 FIBA World Championship for Women) – Senegal coach Moustapha Gaye has announced his 15-strong preliminary squad for the FIBA World Championship for Women.
Among those included are high-scoring Aya Traoré, the leading scorer in the side that went undefeated at last year’s Afrobasket Women in Madagascar.
Traoré poured in 26 points in the Semi-Final triumph over the Ivory Coast that clinched a spot in the FIBA World Championship for Women, and then had 19 in the title game victory over defending champions Mali.
Ndeye Séne from Saint Louis Basket Club is the only player based in the country who is in the squad.
Senegal will play against the United States, France and Greece in Group B at this year’s big event.
Those Preliminary Round games will be held in Ostrava.
Senegal have played in six FIBA World Championships for Women with their first appearance in Bogota, Colombia, in 1975.
They played at the 2006 tournament in Brazil when their lone win came against fellow Africans Nigeria.
Senegal’s best showing at a FIBA World Championship for Women came in 1990 when the event was staged in Malaysia and they won two of their eight games.
