GAINING confidence from their narrow 91-83 defeat by Nigeria the previous day, Scotland's men's basketball team defeated South Africa 91-79 at the Multi Purpose Venue next to Melbourne Cricket Ground to guarantee at least a sixth-place finish.

The Scots gained revenge for defeat in Johannesburg last year and hit their opponents with a flurry of 15 three-pointers. Dan Wardrope led the scoring with 28 points including four threes, Keith Bunyan slotted 21, including six three-pointers and Gareth Murray hit 20 including two. Laurie Costello also chipped in with 14 points as the Scots led 44-38 at half-time and 68-61 after the third.

In the bowls Scotland's Joyce Lindores and Kay Moran will go for gold tomorrow in the women's pairs event.

Australia will provide the final opposition, after Lynsey Armitage and Karen Murphy got the better of rivals Jan and Maria Khan from New Zealand 9-6, 2-11, 2-0.

Alex Marshall is still in the frame to retain his Men's Pairs title. Along with Paul Foster they pulled out all the big shots to see off the better performed Malaysia duo Fairul Izwan and Safuan Said 7-8, 8-7, 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

Darren Burnett is the only unbeaten player in his section in the singles and continues today against CauCau Turagabeci from Fiji.

Scotland's other singles hope, Margaret Letham, resumes her campaign against Botswana's Lebo Moroke.
