The national junior basketball team was officially honoured by the Rwanda Basketball Federation (Ferwaba) upon its excellent performance in the Association of National Olympic Committee of Africa (ANOCA) games that were held last November in Nairobi, Kenya.

The occasion that attracted a huge crowd at Amahoro indoor courts preceded a thrilling game between the junior basketball team and the seniors.

The senior team fielding four professionals but, minus the South African based Raoul Mballa who is out of the country, dominated the game with an 81-62 victory, raising many local basketball fans' hopes ahead of the All African Games' qualifiers.

Ferwaba President Fidele Rutagarama tipped the national team as a top contender for the games' slot.

"I'm happy that the players have started functioning as a unit. The seniors played well today and I am sure that they will even do a lot better by February," noted Rutagarama.

At the end of the intriguing encounter, the federation, through its technical director Innocent Karuhije reminded the fans of the forth-coming Zone V basketball championships that are to be staged in Kigali.

Karuhije called upon all Rwandans to rally behind the national team as it fights to make it to the 9th edition of the All Africa Games. The Games are planned for July 2007 in Algiers, Algeria. "The event winner will automatically be counted into the All African Games," added Karuhije.
