ANKARA (2010 FIBA World Championship) – Russia star Viktor Khryapa is likely to miss his team’s first two games due to tissue problems in his foot.

The 206 cm forward has been restricted to only light workouts and is being monitored closely.

“Right now it’s 95 percent sure that Viktor will miss the first two games in the group,” Russia head coach David Blatt said ahead of his team’s training session on Friday morning. “He’s undergoing treatment and we’re keeping an eye on his progress.

“This is a big blow for us. Viktor is the guy we count on to do a bit of everything for us. It will be hard to replace him. The rest of the guys will have to step up.”

Khryapa last played in an international competition at the 2008 Olympic Games. He missed last year’s EuroBasket through injury.

The 28-year-old helped his country to a gold medal at the 2007 EuroBasket in Spain averaging 11.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Russia open their 2010 FIBA World Championship campaign against Puerto Rico on Saturday.
