MOSCOW (Olympics Women) – The path is now clear for CSKA Moscow’s American Rebbeca Hammon to join Russia’s Olympic squad.
Hammon, who hails from South Dakota and played college basketball at Colorado State, has received her Russian citizenship and national team coach Igor Grudin has already stated his intention to call her up for the preparation camp.
That can now officially take place.
Hammon, who will be 31 on March 11, had an outstanding EuroLeague Women campaign for CSKA this year but her 24-point effort on Friday in Game Two of their quarter-final against UMMC Ekaterinburg was wasted when her team lost 94-90 to crash out of the tournament.
Olga Arteshina, meanwhile, an all-tournament selection for gold medalists Russia at last year’s EuroBasket Women, is expecting her first child.
Arteshina’s last game for CSKA was on February 21 in the Russian Women’s Superleague.
The club has issued a statement which read: "CSKA and Russian national team forward Olga Arteshina is in an off period from sports because of the reason she is going to become a mother soon.
"We congratulate Olga and her family with this happy news and wish her and her baby strong health, and we’re awaiting her return to CSKA and to the national team of Russia."
