TORONTO - Canada’s Men’s National Team has a new general manager. It’s Rowan Barrett, former national team player who was appointed on Tuesday by Canada Basketball after being the program’s Executive Vice-President since 2012.
Among Barrett’s responsibilities will be to continue the development of the men's National Team, which consists of appointing and overseeing staff, game strategies and style, and even analyzing games and the team’s overall performance. However, the main goal is to build a squad of coaches and players that may be candidates to the medals granted by the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“It is a tremendous honour to take on this role and help guide our national team to success on the international stage. Not only are we focused on the podium but also continuing to develop a culture of winning and sacrifice within our teams as we proudly represent Canada every time we step onto the court,” said Barrett.
Barrett, who's 46 and an Ontario native, was part of the Canadian national team for more than a decade; adding 115 games with the red and white jersey, including Olympic Games, two World Cups, and a Panamerican Games. In his professional career of more than 12 years, he saw action in the Greek, Italian, Spanish, French, and Argentine leagues.
Barrett comes to replace Canadian and NBA basketball legend Steve Nash, who was also promoted as the program’s Senior Advisor.
“I am proud of the progress we’ve made as a country,” said Nash. “When I selected Rowan to be my Assistant General Manager, I knew he would do a good job and I am confident he will do a great job as General Manager.
The expectations of the Canadian project are very high — their men’s team have just qualified to the FIBA World Cup with a 10 and 2 record. These were part of the results of Barrett's work, who was also in charge of the junior team that reached the gold medal in the 2017 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup: the greatest world-level achievement in the history of the federation after the silver medal in the 1936 Olympic Games.
