SANTIAGO (Chile) – This past weekend, Pamela Rosado of Puerto Rico and Yohanna Morton of the Dominican Republic reached eight FIBA Women’s AmeriCup editions played after their respective teams’ debut at the 2025 tournament in Santiago, Chile. The veteran guards tied another three players for the record in the modern era (since 2003): Suchitel Ávila, Yamara Amargo (both from Cuba), and Kim Gaucher (Canada). Rosado and Morton helped their countries to successful debuts, as Puerto Rico narrowly beat Colombia (68-65) on Saturday and the Dominican Republic survived a nail-biter against El Salvador (61-59) in its Sunday opener. Rosado led the Boricuas in efficiency (15) and finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. The 39-year-old point guard shot 3-for-6 from downtown.
Morton had a more discrete showing (3 points, 3 rebounds, and an assist). The 37-year-old sat out during the fourth quarter as the coach decided to ride the hot hands— her teammates completed the comeback. Rosado has played in 39 games in the history of the competition and now sits four games away from tying Gaucher’s record-setting 43. Morton tied Arlenys Romero (CUB) and Patty Teixeira (BRA) with 30 and is only one game away from entering the Top 10 in games played.
All data is compiled from 2003 onwards.
NOTE: Center Agostina Burani (Argentina) has now officially played in seven Women’s AmeriCup editions. The 33-year-old was part of the team that traveled to the 2021 tournament (the 2025 edition would make her record-tying 8th appearance), but Argentina had to forfeit its games and abandon the competition due to COVID, per official FIBA rules.
