MIES (Switzerland) - With the field for the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2025 now set, it's time to take a look at each of the contenders and their past record in the competition.
From podium challengers to first-timers, here's what you need to know about the past tournament record of the 16 teams ready to step out in Brno, Czechia next year.
Australia - 8th appearance
The Sapphires have never missed an appearance at the global showcase and are the only team other than USA to be crowned champions after their historic and glorious gold in Zaragoza in 2016. Australia will land at the event as the reigning FIBA U16 Women's Asia Cup 2025 champions.
Canada - 8th appearance
Canada made history when they reached the Final of the competition at the last edition in 2024. An ever present nation, this will be their 8th appearance at an event and they confirmed their spot with second place at the FIBA U16 Women's AmeriCup 2025.
China - 5th appearance
After missing the last two editions, China are back for their 5th appearance in the competition and looking to emulate the inaugural tournament in 2010 when they attained their sole podium finish. They managed to take a 4th place finish at the FIBA U16 Women's Asia Cup 2025.
Colombia - 2nd appearance
Colombia will feature in the competition for only the second time, having previously made their debut at the 2018 edition in Belarus. They confirmed their spot by sealing a fourth place finish at the FIBA U16 Women's AmeriCup 2025.
Côte d'Ivoire - 1st appearance
A newcomer in the competition, Côte d'Ivoire will proudly take their first step at the U17 Worlds in Brno. The 2026 debutantes locked in their place with a surprise run to the Final of the FIBA U16 Women's AfroBasket 2025 where they were denied a shock title by Egypt.
Czechia - 3rd appearance
The host nation of the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2026, Czechia will be looking to maintain their proud record of having secured a top five finish in both of their previous appearances. They finished in 13th place at FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket 2025.
Egypt - 4th appearance
Egypt are getting ready to appear for the fourth time and they have real momentum behind them as this will also be their third consecutive edition. They took their spot for next year's edition by being crowned FIBA U16 Women's AfroBasket champions.
Germany - 2nd appearance
Germany are on the rise in basketball across all levels and in the same year as the nation will host the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026, they will feature for a second time at the U17 Worlds. Last appearing at the 2022 edition. They sealed theit ticket by taking the last podium step at the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket.
Japan - 8th appearance
Japan maintain their perfect appearance record having never missed an edition since the tournament's inception in 2010. They have not yet managed to hit the podium and resume their medal hunt having finished on the last podoium step at the FIBA U16 Women's Asia Cup 2025.
Latvia - 3rd appearance
Having featured at back to back editions in 2016 and 2018, Latvia dip back into the U17 Worlds looking to make it their best campaign to date and improve on their 10th and 8th place finishes. They secured their berht for 2026 after riding their way to the Semi-Finals at the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket.
Mexico - 5th appearance
Mexico have excelled when it comes to landing a spot in this competition and they will line up for an impressive 5th time and also a super third straight appearance. They locked down their place thanks to a memorable podium finish at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup when they checked out in third spot.
New Zealand - 4th appearance
After missing out on the first four editions of the tournament, New Zealand are ready to make it a fabulous four appearances in a row. They will also head to Brno on a high after they made the title game at the FIBA U16 Women's Asia Cup for the first time in their history, taking the runners-up spot.
Serbia - 1st appearance
Serbia will proudly make their first ever appearance when the action tips-off in Brno and they will be keen to make some noise on debut. They secured the opportunity to write a new historic chapter thanks to finishing in 5th place at the FIBA Women's EuroBasket.
Slovenia - 2nd appearance
Having only ever appeared once previously in the competition back in 2022, it's now two in three editions as they book their return off the back of a brilliant run at the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket. They ended up contesting the Final and while having to settle for silver, it showed their potential for Brno next year.
Spain - 8th appearance
Another ever present who has racked up a perfect 8 from 8, Spain will take their usual spot in the tournament's lineup as they look to show why they could be a favorite for the podium. They have made the Final three times and will step out in 2026 as the reigning FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket champions.
USA - 8th appearance
The incredible legacy of USA in this competition will continue as the holders continue the defense of their title for yet another edition. They have appeared at every single tournament, winning a remarkable 6 titles in 7 editions. Inevitably they arrive having continued their domination of the FIBA U16 Women's AmeriCup this year.
