MATOSINHOS (2015 U16 European Championship Women) - The eagerly anticipated U16 European Championship Women Quarter-Finals are all set after Portugal and Latvia grabbed the last two remaining slots for Friday's line-up in Matosinhos.
Roared on by another massive crowd, hosts Portugal blasted their way past Turkey with an eye-bulging shooting performance in the first-half. They collected a wonderful 80-59 triumph and made history with their first-ever spot in the Last Eight.
Ana Ramos helped to get the home party started heading into the rest day with a mesmerising shooting night that helped her to put up 19 points along with 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.
The other ticket which was still on offer on the last day of the Second Round was snapped up by Latvia who saw off Germany 64-52 as Luize Septe stepped up with a magnificent line. She garnered 15 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks to catapult her side into the Quarter-Finals.
Something had to give when the four unbeaten teams locked horns and it was Italy and France who kept their perfect records heading into the last three days.
France will face Portugal in the Quarter-Finals after they took top spot in Group F, coming from behind to hand Hungary their first loss with a 51-49 victory.
Defending champions Russia suffered their first defeat by falling 68-56 against Italy. With the victory, the Italians took first place in Group E and set up a Quarter-Final meeting with Latvia. Lorela Cubaj had 13 points and 7 rebounds as a spellbinding 31-5 run in the first half paved the way to victory.
Russia will play against Spain who had little difficulty in sending Belgium to the Classification Round by imposing a 60-46 loss on their opponents.
In the other Second Round games, Czech Republic beat Slovak Republic in a derby match-up by 64-58 and will face Hungary on Friday.
In the Classification Round, Croatia achieved an impressive three wins in a row after beating Netherlands 72-46.
Finally, England played their best game of the tournament so far but remain winless after being squeezed out 70-65 by Serbia after Nevena Dimitrijevic caught fire from the arc and sunk 20 points.
