BERLIN (Germany) - France will be looking to justify their tag as tournament frontrunners when they step out in Thursday's FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Quarter-Finals against China.
France have never sealed a top four finish since the inaugural edition in 1953, but could their long wait be about to end? Meanwhile China are just two wins away from repeating their success in Sydney 2022 when they made the title game.

Key Matchup
Could rising star Dominique Malonga be about to play one of the most important roles for France in this tournament by being tasked with shutting down China's marquee star Xu Han?
Both giants in terms of their height, but also how they have impacted this competition, it will be a brilliant battle in the paint. Han has led China to this stage with four double-doubles in a row, while despite still being only 20 years old, Malonga is in the top three for France in efficiency, scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks.
Stats Don't Lie
France have so much firepower and average a staggering 33 more points per game than China at 101.7 compared to 68.7 and that is a big gap to have to make up.
France are also devastating when it comes to punishing errors with an eye-popping 32 points per outing from turnovers, with just 7 per game for China. The only edge China has in any statistical categories are that they are very slightly better in rebounding and also points in the paint.
The Killer Questions
China showed they can play a little quicker than most people think when they outlasted Puerto Rico in their last game. But still, can they do what it takes to control the tempo? Surely they can't engage in any kind of 'run and gun' with France.
The slower the game, the more their chances of a shock win increases.
France will arguably have the biggest test to date in the tournament after rolling all three group opponents over. Can they maintain their defensive intensity and continue in a slick offensive gear, both inside and out?
Recent Game History
This is a repeat of the Quarter-Finals clash from Sydney 2022 when both sides met at this stage and China took a terrific 85-71 victory. Xu Han claimed a near double-double that day with 13 points and 9 boards.
Since then, the only time the teams have clashed was in the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2024 when France extracted revenge with a dominant 82-50 success.
