Japan took advantage of a lack-lustre Chinese Taipei to win their 5th-8th place classification match 78–67 in the men’s basketball tournament at Sport City on Wednesday. Chinese Taipei lost a thrilling quarterfinal with Qatar the previous evening and were a shadow of the team that had pushed the hosts into overtime.

Japan will meet Korea to determine 5th and 6th place on Thursday at 16:15. Korea, champions in Busan four years ago, beat Kazakhstan 94–74 to progress. Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei will contest the seventh and eighth place match on Thursday at 14:00.

Also on Wednesday, Lebanon beat Bahrain 90–65 and Syrian beat Uzbekistan 111–104. The two victors will meet in the ninth and 10th classification match on Thursday at 11:15 and the losers will play for 11th and 12th places at 09:00.

After their loss, Chinese Taipei coach Lii Yun Kung said, "Our players played very well last night so I cannot criticise them. I will take the blame for this loss, not the players. Every team has made progress on their strengths, but we have four to five players who have been injured during this tournament. I encourage them to do better. All the matches that they played have been good for me."

Chinese Taipei centre Tseng Wen Ting said, "We haven't recovered physically and our spirit is not so high. We want to play well, but we can't. The game last night influenced us very much." Japanese coach Kimikazu Suzuki said, "We are quite good in offence and also defence, but our defensive rebounding is terrible, we jump, but do not box-out."

After their victory, Lebanon centre Joseph Vogel revealed his discontent at their lowly position, he said, "We can only blame ourselves for the position that we are in. We just didn't show for this tournament, everyone else was just a lot better prepared than us."
