The Qatar national basketball team will play two friendlies against Perth Wildcats, a leading Australian basketball club in Doha as part of the team’s preparations for the World Championships to be held in Japan from August 19-September 3.

The friendlies will be played today and on Sunday at the Al Gharafa Sports Club at 7.00 pm.

In the two teams’ previous meeting in a preparatory match in Taiwan (2004), the leading Aussie side which has a couple of Americans in their ranks, notched up a huge victory over the Qatar national side. The Qatar national team coached by American Joseph Stiebing will thus have enough motivation to not only exact revenge on the club side on home territory but also to gain valuable experience.

Qatar national team will however miss the services of Khalid Suleiman Abdi, who is serving a suspension and Ali Turki, who has a family bereavement due to the passing away of his mother.

Coach Stiebing was happy with the national team’s early preparations for the World Championships. "The players were eager to test their skills against a strong team and we are pleased with the excellent work done by the Qatar Basketball Federation in arranging these two games," told the Gulf Times yesterday.

"Playing against tough opponents will definitely hold us in good stead in the future," he added.

After the two friendlies in Doha, the Qatar national team will proceed to Slovenia to play against the country’s club teams (June 14-July 5) and will then participate in the William Jones Cup in Taiwan (July 8-16).

Subsequently, the national team which qualified for the worlds with a third place finish in the Fiba Asia basketball championship in Doha last year, will feature in the Spankowich Cup in Damascus, Syria (July 20-28).

Thereafter in their build up for the worlds  to be held in five Japanese cities, Sapporo, Sendai, Hamamatsu, Hiroshima and Saitama, the Qatar national team will participate in a friendly tournament in Doha (August 1-6) before flying to New Zealand to play two games against the national team in Dunedin (August 8-16).

Qatar squad: Khalid Masud, Malek Salem Abdulla, Saad Abdulrehman Ali, Daoud Musa, Yaseen Ismail (capt), Erfan Ali Saeed, Mohammed Saleem Abdulla, Hammam Ismail, Hashem Zaidan, Omer Abdgader Salem.
