    SAN JUAN (FIBA Americas) - Puerto Rican basketball is in mourning following the death of coach Miguel Mercado. He was 52.

    Mercado was one of the top developers in basketball talent on the island and mentored stars like Panama's Mario Butler and Dallas Maverick star Juan Barea.

    Involved in the game in Puerto Rico for 26 years, he became the youngerst coach to win the league title when he led Titanes to the crown 20 years ago.

    Mercado clinched his second title three years later with Leones de Ponce before claiming his last championship in 1997 with Atleticos de San German.

    He died of lung cancer.
