Guaynabo lead BSN while Leones cool off
PONCE (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) - Mets de Guaynabo lead the BSN standings with a 5-1 record while Leones de Ponce, after starting 4-0, have dropped three straight, two of them over the weekend against Atleticos de San Germán.
Guaynabo dominated Caciques de Humacao 87-69 behind Antoine Walker's 22 points, while Angel Figueroa added 13. The visitors won despite being without import Marcus Fizer, sidelined with a knee injury. He is expected to return this week.
Meanwhile, Capitanes de Arecibo are second behind Guaynabo with a 4-1 mark after edging out Piratas de Quebradillas 87-86.
David Cortes and Larry Ayuso combined for 50 of the home side's points as they came from behind to take the win.
David Huertas had a chance to win it for the visitors, but his shot in the final seconds was swatted away. Lee Nailon had a team-best 25 and Joel Jones Camacho followed with 18 for Quebradillas who fell to 2-3 following the defeat.
Leones de Ponce started the season with four wins in as many games, but have since dropped their last three, including two over the course of the weekend against Atleticos de San Germán.
On Friday, they lost to Atleticos in San German 76-68 as Donald Copeland and Johwen Villegas netted 18 each. Ricky Melendez paced Ponce with 19 while Gabriel Colon had 13.
Then on Sunday in Ponce, San Germán won 97-92 after overtime. The hosts forced the extra session when they tied the game at 87 on DeAngelo Collins' put-back with 6.3 seconds left.
In the overtime, Alphonse Dyer, Leroy Hickerson and Blake Walker carried the offensive load for the triumphing visitors.
Walker had a game-high 29 for San Germán and Hickerson added 24. Dyer had a huge game with 19 points, 19 rebounds and two blocks. Copeland had a double-double of his own with 12
points and 11 assists.
Melendez was the high-man once again for Ponce with 21, while Collins finished with 19 and Bobby Joe Hatton went for 16 points and handed out 11 dimes. He reached the 2,000 assist mark in the game.
In other weekend games, Vaqueros de Bayamón got the better of Cangrejeros de Santurce 95-86 and Gallitos de Isabela edged out Indios de Mayagüez 95-89.
