SEOUL (KBL) - Puerto Rico coach Flor Melendez can only look at the numbers that Peter John Ramos is putting up early in the Korean league season and wonder what sort of impact the giant center would have had on the FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina.

Ramos, who is 2.22m in height, couldn't play for the Boricuas because of a hernia operation he needed at the end of the Puerto Rican league season.

The national team came within a missed three-ball at the buzzer of upsetting hosts Argentina in the Semi-Finals.

Their fourth-place finish in the tournament, after a bronze-medal game defeat to the Dominican Republic, landed Puerto Rico in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the second consecutive time.

Ramos, who made his Olympic debut for Puerto Rico at the Athens Games seven years ago, has recovered nicely from his hernia surgery because with Samsung in Korea's top flight, he poured in 22 points and corralled 11 rebounds in the team's 85-81 win over SK Knights – his first game of the season.

He followed that up with 14 points and five boards in an 81-74 defeat to LG Lakers.

There is a chance that next summer, Ramos could end up facing the players he is going up against now in the Far East when Puerto Rico attempt to reach the London Games because the Koreans earned a trip to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament with a bronze-medal finish at the Asian Championship in China.
