MAYAGUEZ (2010 Centrobasket Championship for Women) - Puerto Rico won their first Gold medal in the history of the 2010 Centrobasket Championship for Women after dominating Jamaica 72-48.
Jazmine Sepulveda led Puerto Rico with 20 points and also dished out 6 assists. Sepulveda was selected as the MVP of the tournament.
Pamela Rosado added 11 points while Stephanie Rosado and Angiely Morales netted 10 each.
Puerto Rico started the game by going to the paint and then Sepulveda, with 9 points almost at the end of the first quarter gave Puerto Rico a 24-12 lead.
In the second quarter Jamaica made some defensive adjustments and lowered the lead as Simone Edwards and Vanessa Gidden combined for 12 points in the quarter as they finished the half 37-30 in favor of the Puerto Ricans.
The Puerto Ricans took off in the third quarter with a 17-0 run to increase the lead 54-30. The first basket by Jamaica was one by Vanessa Gidden with 1:44 left. Jamaica made only 5 points against 20 from Puerto Rico to finish up 57-35.
In the final quarter Jamaica could not react to the Puerto Rican defense and they celebrated in front of their fans.
Vanessa Nicole Gidden netted 20 points and Nicole Louden 11 for Jamaica.
Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Mexico qualified for the 2011 FIBA-Americas Championship (Pre-Olympic) and the 2011 Pan-American Games.
