SAN JUAN (National Team) - Manolo Cintron has been appointed coach of Puerto Rico after an unanimous decision by the country's Basketball Federation (FBPR). Cintron was elected to succeed Julio Toro, who announced his retirement from the helm of the national team after 20 years in charge following the FIBA World Championship in Japan last year.
SAN JUAN (National Team) - Manolo Cintron has been appointed coach of Puerto Rico after an unanimous decision by the country's Basketball Federation (FBPR).
Cintron was elected to succeed Julio Toro, who announced his retirement from the helm of the national team after 20 years in charge following the FIBA World Championship in Japan last year.
The new coach was working as Toro's assistant until the end of last year's major international event.
The FBPR announced the final decision was made after hearing from all the nominated candidates.
Cintron, who is currently coaching Leones from Ponce, will manage the team in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro between July 13 and 29, and the home Tuto Marchand
Cup which takes place from August 16 to 18.
Both competitions will serve as warm-up events to his first major task, the FIBA Americas Championship, to be held in Las Vegas later this year.
