ARECIBO (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) – Capitanes de Arecibo saw off Leones de Ponce 74-66 on Tuesday night to stand as the last undefeated team in BSN.
David Cortes had a game-high 20 points, Angelo Reyes added 13 and Courtney Sims chipped in with 12 for Capitanes who improved to 3-0.
The defeat was the first of the season for Leones (4-1).
Cortes and Sims helped the hosts get off to a quick start out of the gates, to take an early 10-3 lead.
The visitors used an 8-1 spurt to tie it at 11 before Reyes and Cortes put Arecibo in front 15-11.
Alvin Cruz and Bobby Joe Hatton spearheaded a second quarter run by Ponce, who took a 35-29 at intermission.
The teams went back and forth throughout the third period, battling for the lead before Capitanes scored nine unanswered points in the final frame to go up 69-58 and Leones lacked the consistency required to make a late comeback.
Cruz led Ponce with 19 points and Hatton added 12.
Meanwhile, Caciques de Humacao won their first game of the season after edging out Cangrejeros de Santurce 74-71.
John Millsap and James Mays provided some timely offense in the final quarter to help Caciques regain the lead and never relinquish it. The two players combined for 35 points.
Roberto Nieves had 18 points for Cangrejeros and Marquis Gainous added 14.
Tonight, Mets de Guaynabo pay a visit to Indios de Mayagüez and on Thursday Arecibo travel to Santurce.
