DALLAS (NBA) - Puerto Rican guard Jose Juan Barea has signed for NBA side Dallas Mavericks and will be available for selection when the season starts on Tuesday.
Barea, who played in his homeland at Santurce-based club Cangrejeros in the BSN league, is the seventh Puerto Rican to be part of the official rosters of an NBA team.
"It's official. I stay in Dallas. It's tremendous because it's what I've wanted," Barea told El Nuevo Dia newspaper after penning the deal.
"This it what I've been fighting for all my life.
"Now, it's time to keep on working hard and learn from the veterans," the 22-year-old added.
Barea took part in seven games at a pre-season Dallas training camp, averaging 5.7 points and 3.3 assists per game.
The other Puerto Ricans to play in the NBA were Butch Lee, Jose "Piculin" Ortiz, Ramon Ramos, Daniel Santiago, Peter John Ramos, plus Carlos Arroyo, who is currently playing at Orlando Magic.
