ANKARA (2010 FIBA World Championship) – Carlos Arroyo has not played since suffering an injury against Russia in Puerto Rico’s Group C opener on Saturday and will not be back until at least Thursday, the final day of Preliminary Round play.

Arroyo took a knee to his left quadriceps area, very close to his hip and had some internal bleeding.

Puerto Rico head coach Manolo Cintron confirmed his star guard’s condition is improving but that no precise timeline could be set for his return.

“We take it day by day. If you ask me, he’s not ready yet. I think he can be ready for Thursday’s game,” he said.

“We will have to wait and see. Carlos wants to try and play on Wednesday against Turkey but I don’t think he’s ready.”

Puerto Rico big men Peter John Ramos and captain Daniel Santiago played sparingly in the team’s 84-76 win over China but Cintron clarified it had nothing to do with injuries, but more a case of favourable match-ups.

“The game was very quick because China’s big players are really quick. They also have good three-point shooters so I had to take out Peter and Daniel,” he explained. “That is why we used (Nathan) Peavy and (Renaldo) Balkman so much.”
