TEL AVIV (Euroleague) - Puerto Rico captain Carlos Arroyo has joined the growing number of NBA players who have left North America for Europe after agreeing to terms with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The 29-year-old Arroyo, who just played at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament where the Puerto Ricans narrowly missed out on a place at the Beijing Games with a fourth-place finished, has signed a one-year deal with the Israeli giants.
"I'm very happy we've completed this signing," Maccabi coach Effi Birnboim said on the club's official website.
"Arroyo is a player of the highest standard and has been our top priority for a while.
"Luckily for me, Maccabi's management agreed to sign him despite the huge costs. This is exactly the player we need. He's a great basketball player as well as being a great leader."
Arroyo, a seven-year NBA veteran after short stints with Toronto, Denver before moving to Utah and then Detroit. He spent the last two seasons with Orlando.
Josh Childress turned down an extension with the Atlanta Hawks while Carlos Delfino of Argentina, Nenad Krstic of Serbia and Spain's Jorge Garbajosa have departed the NBA to play in Europe.
