The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has confirmed the Philippines’ participation in the 3-on-3 event of the 1st Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this August.
The Philippines will be one of the 20 teams that will be competing in the Youth Olympics marking the first time in 32 years that the country will be playing in a world basketball event.
The last time the Philippines competed in the world basketball stage was in 1978 during the World Men’s Basketball Championship in Manila.
The next task for the team, which will be coached by former La Salle Green Archer Mon Jose, is to name the four-member roster that will see action in the August 14 to 26 Youth Games.
Jose, who is aiming for a quarterfinal stint for the Nationals, will name the RP 3-on-3 team in two weeks. Those trying out for the squad are Michael Tolomia, Jerome Teng, Jelo Alolino, Michael Bate, Kevin Ferrer, Kieffer Ravena and the son of former seven-time PBA best import winner Bobby Sr., Bobby Ray Parks Jr.
The Philippines is one of the few countries from Asia that earned a spot in the Youth Olympics.
The RP 3-on-3 squad finished second in the Asian Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia and placed fourth in last year’s Asian Youth Games.
