MANILA (PBA Commissioner’s Cup) - Joe Casio had a game-high 29 points and led Smart Gilas Pilipinas to a 99-94 win over Rain or Shine on Friday to extend their winning streak to five games.

Smart Gilas, the core of the Philippines National Team preparing for the 26th FIBA Asia Championship in China later this year, are the only unbeaten team in the PBA Conference so far.

Casio (pictured) made 10 of 14 field goals and also dished out four assists.

American Marcus Douthit, a strong candidate for naturalisation, was as strong as ever under the boards, finishing with 23 points, a game-high 18 rebounds and four blocks.

“We’re virtually in (the playoffs) and we’re now in a situation where we can try to get the No. 1 or No. 2 position,” said Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman.

“Our goal is to make the playoffs and gain toughness and confidence which can help prepare us for the FIBA Asia championship.

Toroman knew his team was in for a tough test on the day.

“We expected this game to be close,” he added. “Rain or Shine is a respectable team. It was an aggressive game and it was a great win for us.

"We’re getting better and better every game and I’m very satisfied.”

“I think Adams not being in his elements helped us,” he said of Rain or Shine's import Hassan Adams.

Adams, a former New Jersey Nets forward and the only import with NBA credentials in the PBA Conference this year, was held to 14 points.

Ronjay Buenafe was Rain or Shine's high man with 16 points.
