[by Gustavo CARDOSO] - So here we are again to talk about the “Peneiras”, but this time with a focus on the old school. As with the kids that just started playing the game, the older fellas have also gone through the peneiras, and their “sifting process”.
In a weekend when Palmeiras won the São Paulo State football title for the 22nd time, this video honors the Palestra Italia with interviews of Gustavo Aguirre, a member of the 1974 FIBA WC Argentinean squad, and former Obras Sanitarias, Franca, and Palmeiras forward. Aguirre currently lives in São Paulo, and one of his kids, Gabriel Aguirre, is following his steps facing some tough peneiras in Europe (he is playing in Zaragoza).
The other old schooler we found while walking around the clubhouse at Rua Turiassu was Mr. Celso Masa, a former player, and member of the Palmeiras coaching staff. He talks about top players who either started their careers or played at Palmeiras at a young age. Talents such as Carioquinha, Oscar Schmidt, and many other legends of Canarinho basketball.
Enjoy the video as both former players talk about their relationship with the youth teams try-outs. The club's youth squads history and its future are discussed briefly, and images of the trophy room at the clubhouse show that Palmeiras has a long tradition with the sport.
