Argentina announce squad for Rio Test Event

BUENOS AIRES (2016 Rio Olympics) - Melissa Gretter is the headline name in the Argentina squad that is to play at the Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janeiro next month.

An All-Star Five selection at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship in Edmonton, Canada, after leading her country to third place and a spot in the 2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT), Gretter excelled at point guard.

Argentina reached the podium with a 66-59 victory over Brazil.

Gretter will be hoping to lead Argentina's women into an Olympic Games for the first time when the WOQT is staged 13-19 in June. 

National team coach Cristian Santander has several other players that featured at the FIBA Americas Women's Championship for the Test Event, which is being held 10-17 January in Rio. They are Andrea Boquete, Agostina Burani, Diana Cabrera, Celia Fiorotto, Sandra Pavon and Ornella Santana. Julieta Armesto, Sofia Aispurua, Sofia Castillo, Nadia Flores and Natacha Perez have also been included in the Argentina squad.

Argentina are hoping that Sthefany Thomas, a member of the FIBA Americas Women's Championship team, will also be able to join Santander and Co but have yet to confirm her availability.

In addition to Argentina, Australia, Venezuela and hosts Brazil are taking part in the Test event.

The draw for the 12-team WOQT, meanwhile, will take place on 26 January at the House of Basketball, FIBA's headquarters in Mies, Switzerland.
