WELLINGTON (Women National team) - New Zealand will soon draw up a shortlist of candidates for the vacant position of Tall Ferns coach.

The Kiwis’ Beijing Games boss Mike McHugh has decided not to seek reappointment and Basketball New Zealand have received 16 applications for the post.

McHugh took the reins in 2005 following Tom Maher's decision to leave and coach China.

The Tall Ferns had some bright moments under his leadership, including a first-ever win over Australia at the 2008 Beijing Basketball Test Event, but the team managed just a single victory over Mali at the Olympics.

"I’ve been coaching for nearly 40 years and at this level for 16, so it’s time for a break,” McHugh said.

“I won’t be lost to basketball … I’m still keen to be involved as a resource where needed.”

McHugh is helping prepare the Junior Tall Blacks for the FIBA World U19 Championship that tips off in New Zealand on July 2.
