The Tall Ferns prevailed over their arch rivals 63-59, snapping a four-game losing skid at the 2008 Beijing Basketball Test Event.
Noni Wharemate’s baseline drive and lay-up in the final minute proved to be the clinching basket.
Jillian Harmon, a recent addition to the New Zealand roster who plays college basketball in the United States at NCAA powerhouse Stanford, had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Point guard Angela Marino was the other Tall Fern to reach double figures, finishing with 12 points.
New Zealand will take on Korea in the battle for fifth place while Australia face Cuba in a fight for third.
The USA meet China in Saturday’s title game.
