ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - With the aim of improving National Federations activities, FIBA organised its FIBA Plus Strategic Planning Program workshop over the weekend in Abidjan.

Three topics – Governance Fundamentals, Grassroots Basketball Fundamentals and 3x3 Basketball Fundamentals - dominated the two-day event attended by nine Francophone Africa National Federations.

The National Federations of Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Mauritania, Niger and Togo learned that building professional leadership and focuses on developing National Federation is fundamental to organize, professionalize and commercialize their basketball activities.

Running the FIBA Plus session in Abidjan was its coordinator Florian Pasquet, who explained that Fundamentals are the DNA of the FIBA Plus Program. “It’s always about planning,” Pasquet pointed out.

It’s the second time that Africa National Federations attend a FIBA Plus Program since its introduction last year.

In 2021 National Federations of Cape Verde, Mozambique, Rwanda and Uganda participated in the event.

Former Central African Republic international player Maurice Beyina now serving as his National Federation Technical director, welcomed the initiative.

“For us, this is an incredible gift that FIBA is providing to national federations,” Beyina acknowledged.

“We all know that we need to do some work and get our federation up and running; we also aim to be more professional. Even though the Central African Republic won the AfroBasket twice, we still have some work to do. This is a key moment for a federation like ours.”

We have some work to do in the structure of the federation, and it’s really important to start from the basics, especially this year when we have been eliminated from World Cup African Qualifiers. This is probably the great time for us to come back to the basics. We hope this program to help us get ourselves ready for the next three to four years, but also to help us to run our federation the best way, taking care of the federation activities.”

The FIBA Plus Program is designed to assist National Federations in planning and managing basketball activities in their countries.

These nine federations will be followed over 12 months through a monitoring program for the implementation of their operational plan following the workshop.

An equivalent workshop for English-speaking federations will be held before the end of the year.
