MIAMI (United States) – The FIBA Regional Office in the Americas, in partnership with the Nicaraguan Basketball Federation (FENIBAL), officially announced that Nicaragua will host the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in 2029. The tournament will be held from June 30th to July 8th, 2029, at the Polideportivo Alexis Arguello in Managua, a venue that will once again welcome one of the most important events in continental basketball.
The announcement was made during the Centrobasket Qualifier for the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027, which is currently being played in Nicaragua’s capital at the same sports venue. The FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2029 will bring together the 10 best national teams in the Americas for the special 20th edition of the competition.
“We receive with great joy, pride, and a profound sense of responsibility the designation of Managua as the host city of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2029, the most important women’s basketball tournament in the Americas,” said Reyna Rueda Alvarado, Mayor of Managua.
It will mark the first time that Nicaragua hosts the continent’s premier women’s national team tournament, representing another milestone for the country’s basketball program. “Today, Managua boasts modern sports facilities and the necessary infrastructure to ensure the success of this major event, the result of the investments and efforts made to promote the development of sports and recreation for our people,” Rueda Alvarado added.
Nicaragua previously left a positive impression as host of the FIBA AmeriCup 2025, which was also held at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello.
“Women’s basketball is a key global strategic priority for us at FIBA. Enabling women to win on and off the court will continue to be our main focus. We have a strong partnership with the Nicaraguan Basketball National Federation and the government authorities in Managua. Both entities have delivered one of the best Men’s AmeriCups in the history of our organization in 2025, and now Nicaragua turns the same level of support and importance to women by confirming the host of this epic event in 2029. I’m very grateful to them and all that they do to develop the ecosystem of basketball in the Americas,” said Carlos Alves, CEO of FIBA in the Americas. The selection of Managua as host city further highlights the growth and consolidation of basketball in Central America. With El Salvador set to host the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027 and Nicaragua following in 2029, the region continues to gain prominence on the continental stage while strengthening their commitment to the development of women’s basketball.
