LAGOS (Basketball Camp) - Preparations are in top gear for the successful hosting of the first international Camp in Africa for 2006. The Camp, tagged “ Big Man Camp Nigeria 06” is the brainchild of Masai Ujiri of Radar Hoops/International Scout with the Denver Nuggets and Col. Sam Ahmedu (rtd), International Scout with the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Camp which comes up at the Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos from May 10 through 13, will feature 50 prospective Nigerian talents who are 6’ 8” and above and falls within the age bracket of 15 years and 19 years.
The camp will have a mixture of foreign and local coaches as instructors, the foreign coaches are drawn mainly from the NBA and various Colleges in the United States of America which will include Jarin Akana of the Denver Nuggets, Bill Bryno and a host of others.
Speaking from his US base, earlier in the week Nigeria former international and initiator of the camp, Masai ujiri stated that the aim of the Camp is to improve the fundamental skills of the young prospective Nigeria post players and begin to organize them into peer groups by ensuring their development in the appropriate manner.
Some of the players who have made their mark at the annual FIBA/NBA Basketball Without Borders Camp in South Africa will also be part of the Camp. He added that another unique aspect of the event is the selection of some players from the Camp to participate in the Nike sponsored Africa Camp in Dakar, Senegal from May 15 to 18 this year.
A tentative Camp programme reveals that Campers are expected to arrive Lagos on May 10 so as to complete registration and accommodation formalities as well as for distribution of kits, while a press briefing to herald the event will hold later in the day.
Some of the local coaches slated for the camp includes; Adeka Daudu (Bauchi Nets & Nigeria), Adewumi Aderemi (First Bank & Nigeria), Alexander Owoicho (Dodan Warriors), Mike Akuboh (ABU Zaria), Peter Ahmedu (Warriors Academy) and Scott Nnaji (Nigeria Customs & Nigeria).
The camp will also have Sam Ahmedu, Oliver Babatunde Johnson, Isah Umar, Godwin Owinje and Ugo Udezue as Camp Directors.
