Injury has forced Wellington forward Brendon Polyblank out of the Ramsay Shield men's basketball series against Australia.

New Zealand will play Australia in the opening match of the two-test series in Auckland on Thursday with a second game in Melbourne on Saturday.

Polyblank told Tall Blacks coach Nenad Vucinic today he had aggravated a foot injury and could not join the squad in Auckland.

"Brendon's withdrawal has merely opened up some doors for others," said Vucinic who does not intend to call up a replacement.

Polyblank's exit reduces the squad to 12 for the series against Australia.

One player - either Casey Frank or Nick Horvath, who are competing for the one naturalised spot available - will be cut before the team head to Canada on Sunday as part of their build-up for the Olympics qualifying tournament in Athens, Greece, next month.

New Zealand Breakers player Kirk Penney, who is on an off-season break in the United States, will join the squad in Canada.
