    New Zealand - Dickel back to assist Vucinic in Olympic

    The former Tall Ferns coach Carl Dickel has been recalled from the wilderness to help the New Zealand men's team qualify for next year's Olympics. Dickel has been invited to fill the role of assistant to head coach Nenad Vucinic for the FIBA Oceania qualifying series against Australian in August, with the winners claiming a direct berth to Beijing.

    The former Tall Ferns coach Carl Dickel has been recalled from the wilderness to help the New Zealand men's team qualify for next year's Olympics.

    Dickel has been invited to fill the role of assistant to head coach Nenad Vucinic for the FIBA Oceania qualifying series against Australian in August, with the winners claiming a direct berth to Beijing.

    The losers face a tough repechage tournament featuring many of the world's top teams who are also doomed to miss qualifying through their respective zones.

    Dickel (60), whose son Mark is a point guard with the Tall Blacks, coached the New Zealand women from 1995-2000, finishing after the Sydney Olympics. He coached four years in the men's National Basketball League

    (59 wins/38 losses), most recently in 1997 when Otago last made the semifinals.

    Last year, he coached Otago in the Women's Conference Basketball League.
