On Monday, they had to play without France point guard Tony Parker and Argentina's Manu Ginobili, too, and the Portland Trail Blazers took full advantage by winning at the AT&T Center, 100-92.
The loss was a fourth in a row for the Western Conference leading Spurs (57-17).
The defeat allowed the idle Los Angeles Lakers to pull to within three and a half games of the lead.
Without Parker (left knee contusion) and Ginobili (left quad contusion) on the floor, Portland point guard Andre Miller poured in a team-high 26 points.
Also for the Blazers, France's Nicolas Batum had 13 rebounds to go with his 10 points and Rudy Fernandez of Spain added eight points off the bench.
Tiago Splitter of Brazil is getting extended playing time for the Spurs with Duncan (sprained ankle) out and he had 14 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes.
Portland improved to 43-31 and closed the gap on fifth-place Denver to one and a half games.
Eastern Conference leaders Chicago (53-20) and second-place Boston (51-22) both slipped up on Monday.
The Bulls lost at home to Philadelphia, 97-85.
Team USA world champion Andre Iguodala played 40 minutes for Philadelphia and had 19 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Indiana remained in eighth place at 33-42 in the East and a game ahead of ninth-place Charlotte, who scraped an 87-86 triumph over Milwaukee.
The Bucks fell to 29-44 despite getting 26 points apiece from Australia's Andrew Bogut and point guard Brandon Jennings.
Argentina's Carlos Delfino was just one of seven from the floor and scored five points.
The New York Knicks needed overtime and 39 points and 10 boards from Carmelo Anthony to beat the visiting Orlando Magic, 113-106.
The victory ended a six-game losing streak for the Knicks (36-38) and dropped Orlando to 47-27.
The Knicks are seventh in the East, two games adrift of sixth-place Philadelphia while the Magic are fourth at 47-27 and four a half behind Miami and Boston.
The other NBA game on Monday night saw Washington win for just the second time away from home in a 100-95 overtime win at Utah.
John Wall had 28 points and seven assists for the Wizards.
China's Yi Jianlian had five rebounds and two blocks to go with his six points for Washington.
