MEMPHIS (NBA) - Pau Gasol returned to his former club Memphis and had 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

It wasn't enough to top the Memphis Grizzlies, though, who got 10 points, nine boards and three blocks from his brother and fellow Spain international, Marc, in a 98-96 win for the home side.

Team USA’s Rudy Gay preserved the fourth straight win for the Griz when he blocked Ron Artest’s attempt from three-point range at the end.

Defense was the name of the game for the United States in their unbeaten run to the gold medal at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey and Gay says he and his Memphis teammates need to have the same mentality if they are going to be successful.

"The type of defensive-minded team we are here in Memphis, the sky is the limit,” Gay said.

“We all have aspirations of the play-offs. You have to play (well) defensively every night."

The result means LA have lost three games in a row.

In a close game from start to finish, Mike Conley's 28 points led Memphis.

He hit four of five shots from behind the arc as the hosts improved to 8-10 on the season and dropped two-time defending NBA champions LA to 13-5.

Kobe Bryant had a game-high 29 points in defeat for the Lakers.

In maybe the finest performance of all in the NBA on Tuesday, Tim Duncan had a triple-double to lead San Antonio past Golden State, 118-98.

Duncan finished with 15 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists.

"I couldn't make a shot so I figured I'd pass it and let somebody else make a shot," Duncan said.

"I wasn't trying to do it. Just the flow of the game and the plays that were being called."

Team USA’s Stephen Curry had 32 points in defeat for the Warriors.

Other results (home team first): Cleveland Cavaliers 87 Boston Celtics 106; Orlando Magic 90 Detroit Pistons 79; Philadelphia 76ers 88 Portland Trail Blazers 79; New York Knicks 111 New Jersey Nets 100; Sacramento Kings 98 Indiana Pacers 107.
