OAKLAND (NBA) - The Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off the shock result on Monday night in the NBA when they edged the Golden State Warriors, 109-108.

Minnesota, having lost their previous 16 games away from home, won for just the sixth time in 40 games as Ryan Gomes poured in a career-high 35 points while also claiming 11 rebounds.

Golden State (25-18), who have been one of the league's hottest teams, had a chance to win at the buzzer but Al Harrington failed to tip in a missed lay-up by Warriors star Baron Davis.

Yao Ming erupted for 30 points, pulled down 17 rebounds and swatted three shots as the Houston Rockets claimed a 96-89 home win over the beleaguered Seattle Supersonics.

Yao, the China national team center, was 12 of 19 from the floor and six of nine at the line as Houston improved to 22-19 while Seattle dropped to 9-32.

Luis Scola, Houston's Argentina international forward, played 25 minutes but missed all six of his shots from the floor and had just three rebounds.

The excellent Team USA point guard Deron Williams led the way for the Utah Jazz as they hammered the Los Angeles Clippers 109-93.

Williams, whose fine play help the US capture a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas last year to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, scored 18 points and dished out 13 assists.

Sergio Rodriguez of Spain had 16 points and four assists off the bench as Portland won 111-109 in overtime against Atlanta.

Forward Travis Outlaw banked in a jump shot with just one second left in the extra period for the Blazers (25-16).

Rodriguez, who played just over 16 minutes, also came up with two steals.

In other games, the Boston Celtics thrashed the New York Knicks 109-93 and Washington beat the visiting Dallas Mavericks 102-84.

The Charlotte Bobcats were no match at home against the defending NBA champions San Antonio Spurs, falling 102-84.

Indiana won in Philadelphia 110-103 and New Orleans romped past Milwaukee 106-92.

The Chicago Bulls lost at Memphis 104-90 and Orlando held on at home for a 102-100 win over Detroit.

Cleveland clinched a 97-90 road win at Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers triumphed 116-99 at home over Denver.
