Muya calls it a day with Belgium

BRUSSELS (EuroBasket 2015) - Belgium captain Guy Muya has decided it's time to "pass the torch" and retire from international basketball.

BRUSSELS (EuroBasket 2015) - Belgium captain Guy Muya has decided it's time to "pass the torch" and retire from international basketball.

The 32-year-old, who played at the last couple of EuroBaskets for the Lions, has taken the decision just several weeks after helping Oostende capture the domestic league title with a 3-1 play-off finals triumph over Mons.

"It's 12 years I have proudly worn the national team jersey and now, I think it's time to pass the torch," he wrote in a message on FaceBook.

"It was an honor to be the captain of the Belgian Lions the last four years and a blessing to participate in two European Championships."

Youth is there, ready for the challenge of the next European Championship, so I'm leaving with my heart at peace. - Muya

Muya, a 1.90m shooting guard, played for Eddy Casteels last summer in the 2nd Qualification Round and helped Belgium finish first in Group D.

Belgium will compete in Group D of the EuroBasket in Riga against Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

Muya's voice in practice and during games will be missed.

The Congolese-born player has a reputation for being a leader and that is what recently attracted Basic-Fit Brussels to sign the player.

The coach of the Brussels team, Serge Crevecoeur, said of Muya: "Everyone knows his qualities as a player, but I expect more from Guy.

"His fighting spirit at the highest level and during every workout, as well as his leadership on and off the court should bring added value to us next season."
